I've had this post queued up for awhile and for some reason never posted it. So here goes!

I was lucky enough to receive the Spring Fling VoxBox from Infuenster, filled with all sorts of goodies to try. This is my second Influenster VoxBox and I hope not my last, because I have discovered so many great products thanks to these boxes.

I received The Kiss everlasting French Manicure, Rimmel London Scandaeyes Retro Glam Mascara, Playtex Sport Fresh Balance tampons, NIVEA Skin Firming Hydration Lotion and a Peach Pie Car Air Freshener sponsored by the movie Labor Day.

I already did a full review of the Kiss everlasting nails, which you can read here. But I am obsessed with these nails. I love them. Quick, easy, and great looking nails. Do recommend.

To be honest, I am not a tampon girl. My flow can be really irregular and intermittent, and wearing tampons comfortably is not always practical in that sort of situation. But I do have friends who like and wear them, and this brand is by far the one they prefer. I was happy to pass these on to them.

I have been wearing the Rimmel Retro Glam mascara religiously since I opened it up and tried it. First of all, it comes in Extreme Black, which is my favorite shade. I love my lashes dark, dark, dark. The wand on this mascara is the perfect size, giving me even coverage without clumps or smudges on my eyelid! I like this one in particular because I wear glasses, so it gives me volume, curl and definition without too much length, so my lashes don't hit my lenses all day. Most mascaras I've tried, I need to curl twice because they make my lashes too long.

The NIVEA Skin Firming Hydration lotion is great. It has a really nice, clean, lotion smell that isn't too overpowering, and the lotion itself is creamy without being greasy. It has seemed to firm up my skin a little, though I don't use it religiously, still preferring my Bath and Body Works Triple Moisture Cream in Beautiful Day or everyday use. But this little bottle will be perfect to throw in my bag for my trip to Florida/the Bahamas later this month to keep my skin hydrated in the heat and humidity down there.

Lastly is this cute pie shaped air freshener sponsored by the Labor day movie. I haven't opened it because I don't want to waste the scent, but I am assuming it smells like peaches. I am not really a peach-lover (I prefer orange, lemon and apple scents) so I think this will be perfect to pass on to my mom, as she loves anything peach.

Anyway, this box was really amazing. I got one of my staple favorite products (the Kiss nails), and found a new favorite (the Rimmel mascara). And even though there's a couple things I'm passing on to friends and family, I still say this box was a good one.

A big thank you to Rimmel London, Kiss USA, Playtex, NIVEA and Influenster for sending me these products to try and review.

As I mentioned before, I'm gearing up for a big vacation this month--I'm leaving next week for a cruise to the Bahamas, four days at Disney World and a day at Universal. I'm hoping to get up a couple posts before then with some product reviews, OOTDs and maybe a "What I Packed for Vacation" post. I'll also tr to take lots of pictures while I'm gone and do a couple posts about my trip, some vacation OOTDs and a couple makeup looks for the heat and humidity. But no promises, because I might just forget :)

xoxo
FTC Disclosure: I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.Allyson Raehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04110851843655797458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9101045510429149161.post-5050967653737308032014-06-29T14:26:00.000-04:002014-06-29T14:26:23.772-04:00Kiss everlasting French Manicure - Review and Tips!Hi guys! It's been awhile since I've posted last, and I'm so sorry! Real life got crazy, my job got stressful, and my computer decided to be difficult. Boo! But I missed blogging so much, so I'm gonna try getting back into the swing of things.

Today, I've got a set of Kiss everlasting French Manicure nails to review. I got them in my Influenster Spring Vox Box, and was finally able to try them on. I'm wearing them right now, and have been for a couple days, and I have to say, they are some of the most comfortable and well-fitting nails I've ever tried. So let's jump in.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a photo of the package before I tore into it--oops! But they come in a package that looks like this:

Photo from KissUSA.com

I love the fact that these nails come with the easy applicator tabs. They make it easy to hold and apply the nail, and they are easy to twist off and file down once the nails are applied. The nails also come in a variety of sizes so you can find the perfect fit for every nail. I want to say there were 13 or 14 different sizes. I managed to find a nail that fit perfectly for every finger...except for my right thumb, which I think is just abnormal. Also included is a nail file, a wooden cuticle stick, and a tube of pink nail glue.

These nails come in the 'Real Short' length, which is my favorite length and the length I wish I could get in every design of false nails I try. Personally, I like my nails really, really short without being nubs. Like...not even extending over my fingertips short. But I also want my nails to look strong and healthy--which right now they don't. I'm having some serious nail issues, guys. They flake and peel off in layers, they won't grow, and they constantly look chewed off. It's so sad. But after applying these nails, I instantly look like I have flawless nail beds, and strong, healthy and beautiful nails. I did need to shorten these a little bit more because the thumbnails were slightly too long and a couple of the nails I didn't apply close enough to my cuticle.

They look pretty natural from far away, although when you look up close you can tell they are fakes because of a couple small application problems--user error haha.

A shot of my nails from my instagram: allysonsingsxo (FOLLOW ME!)

Overall, I really love these nails. They are strong and durable, easy to apply, long-wearing and easy to shape and style to fit your personal preferences. I've worn them to do my makeup and didn't lose an eye. I wore them to my retail job and could still pick money up off of counters and show customers jewelry without fumbling with my fingers. Day to day activities are still feasible and I don't feel uncomfortable like I have in the past with some other nails I've tried.

So here are my tips for getting the best wear out of your Kiss false nails:

Be sure your nails are completely clean, and free of oils. Swipe your nails with a nail-polish remover (preferably acetone-based). Slightly buff the surface of your nails in order to give a surface for the glue to adhere to.

Pre-fit your false nails prior to application. Don't be afraid to try four or five different sizes until you find the best fit. My pointer and middle fingers took the longest time to fit because they were similar in size and shape, and I couldn't decide which size it which nail best.

Go light on the glue. You are supposed to put glue on the back of the nail, and a thin layer on your natural nail. However, it is very easy to go heavy-handed and wind up with glue oozing out around the edges, pooling under the free edge of the nail, and coating your fingers. This happened to me. I really like the pink hail glue these nails come with, but honestly, if you are anything like me, it might be easier to work with a brush-on nail-glue rather than a tube you squeeze.

When applying, don't press down too hard on the nail. You need to press firmly, but don't squeeze too hard. I did this on a couple nails and it actually make the fit too tight so there was pulling when i tried to use my fingers. Also, pressing too hard will bend and slightly crack the fake nail, leaving some strange and unsightly white marks on the nail that look like those little white bruises you get on your natural nail. Ask me how I know. ;)

If you get your nails on and they feel too long, don't be afraid to file them down. You may have applied them too far up your nail bed or the nails might just be too long for your comfort, You don't need to struggle with them. They are quick and easy to shorten. You can use a nail file to buff them down. I have one of those battery powered nail tools with the attachments that I use for shortening falsies. If you need a lot of length off, you can even use a heavy-duty pair of clippers then file the rest. Just be careful not to break the nail. With other nails where there is an intricate design at the tip, I pre-file the nail from the bottom cuticle edge. It's a little trickier to do, but it ensures that you have a short enough nail without losing a majority of the pretty design.

If you are new to false nails, or you need a little practice, these Kiss everlasting nails are a great place to start. The easy application tabs make application a breeze, and the variation of sizes makes finding the perfect fit so simple. If the thought of glue-on nails makes you nervous, you do have other options. You can try the preglued Express On Nails or the ImPress Press on Nails for a quick, glue-free experience.

So that's it for this review. Thanks again to Influenster and Kiss for sending me these nails to try in my Spring Vox Box! Hit up the comments down below and tell me about your favorite false nails and any of your tips and tricks!
Vacation Clothes - PHOTO HEAVYAlright guys. We're in for a big one today.

This is my HUGE DEB haul. I went shopping with my two best friends to celebrate my birthday (I turned 24 on St. Patty's Day!), plus my mom paid for my online shopping cart full of stuff as my gift, and THEN I placed another order of my own. Sooo...I got a little less than $300 worth of clothes (actually it's probably worth more due to sales), and they are all for our huge family vacation to Florida in July. Disney, Universal and a Bahamian cruise. I can't wait!

Everyone, say hi to Boots, one of the two mascots of iwearcatshirts. You'll get to meet his brother in an upcoming post :)

So let's get started!

First, we'll start with the things I picked up on my trip to the mall last weekend. DEB was having an in-store sale, BOGO free tops, and 30% shorts. I was really just looking for shorts, but who can pass up BOGO free? Certainly not me.

Let's start with the shirt you KNOW I couldn't pass up. My blog is called iwearcatshirts for goodness sake. I saw it on a four-way and knew it had to be mine. This is a racerback style, and the Kitty Wearing Sunglasses image was too adorable. I love the pop of neon pink in the sunglasses, and I have a feeling I'll be getting a lot of wear out of this baby. I did go up a size from my usual in this one. It fit in my usual size, but I wanted it to be a little more flowy for summer. Plus, I like my white shirts to be looser than other colors because white shows every little thing on my torso.

This Tribal Print Tank is adorable! I love the neutral tones and the black crochet detail is a great touch. I'll probably pair this with black or khaki bottoms and a cute sandal.

This High Low Tank has these cute floral crochet details at the shoulders. It's really simple but I love how flowy and light it is. The website describes this as coral, but to me it leans a little more pink. Not a true pink, but not a true coral either. It's a really pretty color, and I plan on picking up this tank in turquoise too.

This Daisy Peace Sign Tank is super cute too. At first, I wasn't sold on the ruffle detail, but it's growing on me. Daisies are really in for this spring and summer--it's a flashback to the 60s and 70s in the fashion world. I'm seeing daisies EVERYWHERE, and I just love the design of this. This tank does have deep armholes, so if that's something you aren't comfortable with, you might wanna skip this one. I'm usually on the fence about that style, but with a cami, this one doesn't bother me as much. With a cute braided headband and a beach waves hairdo, this will be perfect on the pool deck of the cruise ship.

Now onto the reason I went to the store in the first place: shorts.

I'll be honest: I dread shopping for shorts. I usually have to try on every style in three different sizes, and they are always either too short, or too long. I did luck out and find two pairs on this trip, and the website has a few other styles I might chance ordering now that I have a general idea of my size in the reign denim brand that DEB carries.

First up is this Dark Wash Denim pair of shorts from reign. These shorts are a little longer, though I wouldn't say they are quite bermuda length. Maybe an inch or two above my knee. They have this cute whiskering wash pattern on the front, a double button and zip fly, and I also like the cuff at the bottom of the leg, for a little extra detail.

These shorts also have this really nice detail on the back pocket and a button flap closure.

These denim shorts have a little bit of destruction, but nothing extravagant. I was really drawn to the Tribal Embroidery on the pockets, though it's likely no one will see it but me, since I tend to wear longer shirts untucked. But still...adorable. These shorts are shorter, but not uncomfortably so. I tried on a few pairs that seemed more like booty shorts, but these were a length I could definitely tolerate.

Here's an up close view of the pocket detail. I just think it's so cute. :)

Let's move on to birthday order number one, hmm?

My mom had no idea what to get me for my birthday, and I made a joke that she could just pay for the stuff I'd been putting in my cart while fantasy shopping for a week. Next thing I knew, she was holding my laptop and putting in her credit card number. That day online DEB was selling their tops for 40% off, so I picked up four more tops, along with a couple pairs of my favorite capris and two camis (2 for $12!).

Now this Floral Tank has a story to it. A few weeks ago, I put it in my cart fantasy shopping, and didn't think anything of it. A couple days later, an order arrived at my house that my mother had placed for my sister. She was getting some leggings and added a couple things to the cart to get the free shipping DEB offers for orders over $50. Lo and behold, she pulls out this same tank. I pouted because "I saw it first," but I went ahead and kept it in my cart anyway because I really wanted it. And I'm glad I did. It's so cute. It's got a high low hem and the material is super soft and light.

Plus this detail on the back of the tank is to die for. I love it. I don't care that my sister has it too; I just won't wear it when she wears it. Or I'll hide hers. ;)

And again with the daisies. Pink this time. This is a pretty basic Floral Tank, with a crocheted neckline and straps and a banded bottom. It's really cute but nothing too special. I just like the shape of the tank.

I am obsessed with this tank. It's a basic black high low tank but the Embroidered and Beaded Neckline! It's so much brighter and colorful in person. I love the way it looks.

LOOK AT THIS. It's so pretty. I can't get over it.

Now I am so excited about this Ombre Crocheted Tank. I work in retail, and this style started coming into my store like crazy last spring. I loved the style and the trend, but couldn't find anything like it in a plus size. Until DEB. When I saw this I knew I had to have it. It's obviously really sheer, so I need a nude cami underneath, but it is adorable. The fringe just looks adorable and it's so light and breezy. I'm in love.

Now these capris.

I am OBSESSED with this brand of bottom.

They look and feel like leggings, but have a button and zip fly and the back pockets are functional. I have them in every color you can think of in the pant length, and several more colors in the capri length. So when I saw a jegging version, I jumped on them. So cute and comfy.

I liked them so much that I picked them up in the black denim version as well. From far away, they look true black, but up close you can see that denim detailing.

And finally...birthday order number two.

This order was all tops. I swear DEB has some of the cutest tops this season, and I was happy to find plenty to stock up on.

This Burnout Tye Dye Tank is so bright and vibrant. I love the colors and how comfy it will be in warmer weather. I may actually embellish this with some iron-ons for my trip. I haven't decided yet, but I think a big black Mickey head would look cute on this.

This tank has a Neon Tribal Screen on the front, which I love because I'm really into neons lately.

Also, the crochet detail on the back is amazing. I love how intricate and detailed it is.

This Tye Dye Daisy tank is adorable! It has deep armholes and a large keyhole detail on the back. The color is really vibrant, and although I'm not a big yellow wearer, I couldn't pass it up.I love the glitter on the flower; the whole shirt gives off a 60s vibe. LOVE.

Next is this Aztec Print Trapeze Tank. This tank is a chiffon material, slightly oversized and very flowing. The colors are a pretty pastel and the pattern is super cute.

However, the big draw for me is the ivory bead detail around the collar. It just gives it something a little extra that I love. I love this paired with white denim shorts and some sort of strappy sandal.

This Floral Burnout Tank has a bubble hem, which I am not usually a fan of. However, on this short it really works, I bought it in the teal, but it's also available in royal blue and coral. I love tanks like this because with a solid cami underneath it, the floral pattern really stands out.

This Color Block Racerback Tank is pretty basic but I really liked the color combination--there's something about the black, white and blue that drew me in. Unfortunately, this color combo is currently sold out online. It's really light and comfortable; perfect for a day at the beach or riding roller coasters at Universal Studios.

This last top I actually bought with my job in mind. I have a ton of these chiffon collared sleeveless tanks for summer since my workplace gets so freakin' hot! But this one is a little different, because it doesn't button up; instead it sort of drapes open (or closed) and has this neat twist detail in the front. The only color they have this left in online is ivory, but I might pick it up, just to have something white as well as black. I really overexposed the flash on this one so you could see the details more clearly. It's a really unique style, and I like it a lot.

So, this is my HUGE DEB haul. I really like DEB because they carry cute and trendy plus-size clothing at really reasonable prices. They have amazing dresses--both more formal and more casual, and they seem to always be having some sort of sale. I could easily spend $200+ in one go if I didn't have any sort of self-restraint. Thank God for birthdays that make me feel like I can spoil myself just a little bit. :D (Not to mention, I already have my cart filled up again! eek.)

This post took forever to put together because of all the photos, but I wanted the whole haul altogether. In the future, I'll probably break haul posts up between stores or orders or something. Be on the lookout for my February&March faves and a polish swatch post sometime in the next week.:)
Today I have photos and first impressions of my very first ipsy Glam Bag!

ipsy is a beauty subscription service and community created by YouTube beauty guru Michelle Phan. For $10.00 a month, you get a cute cosmetic travel bag filled with four or five beauty products to try and review for points. You can redeem points to get bonus goodies in an upcoming ipsy bag.

I am a new subscriber and I was really excited to get my first bag in the mail. This is the March 2014 "Destination Beauty" Glam Bag.

This month's bag "Klari" was designed by artist Klari Reis. It is an abstract rendering of a San Fransisco street map, where ipsy was born. I thought it was super cute, although I was kind of hoping for a true map print bag for my upcoming vacation.

Anyway, these are the goodies I got in this month's bag.

This Pixi Flawless beauty primer is really nice. It's smooth and has a subtle glow with a slight shimmer. I tried to swatch it, but it blends so nicely into my skin it didn't show up on camera! I am not a huge primer user because my foundation is a 3-in-1 and works pretty well, but I might use this in the summer when I want a glow without full face makeup.

I also got this Chella Fine-Tip Eyeliner Pen in Indigo Blue. I really don't wear any liner color but black but this liner makes me want to try it. I am OBSESSED with this.

I mean LOOK at that tip. I can only imagine what I could do with a tip like that. The color is really stunning, and I even had my mom swatch it. When she rubbed at it, she described it as "bulletproof." It didn't budge, smudge or smear even seconds after application.

When I saw we were getting a bareMinerals lipstick in the Glam Bag, I was psyched. I was a little less psyched to see it was only a sample size. I expected a full-size tube. But I couldn't stay disappointed when I saw the color. It's so pretty.

This color is not translating well on camera at all. Here it looks kind of coral, but Get Ready is more of a berry pink color. Not super dark, but it definitely doesn't have this orangey look to it in person. It looks amazing with my skin and I wouldn't hesitate to go full-size with this one. I only wish it had been full-size to begin with.

The last product I got this month is the NYX Love in Rio Palette in Moonlit Skinny Dip. The packaging on this is so cute, with a little bow on the latch area. The photo below shows the shades much more true to color.

However, I don't know how I feel about these shades. In the palette, they look gorgeous. But the color payoff was a little disappointing. It might just be my skin tone, or the fact that I've been spoiled with the nudes in my Naked 2 palette, but these ones are just kind of washed out and dull.

The lightest shade barely shows up and the center shade is really dull--not like the vibrant tan/gold shade you see in the package. I'm gonna give them a try on my actual eyelids before I rule them out completely, but right now these ones aren't quite doing it for me.

Overall, I am really happy with my decision to subscribe to ipsy. For $10.00 a month, you can't beat getting cool new brands and products to try. I was a little bummed to not get the Nicole by OPI Roughies polish that was also available in the bags this month, but then again, I have more polish than I know what to do with.

If you are interested in subscribing to ipsy, you can sign up here. I think it's a really cool service.

I am waiting on more more order to be delivered, and then I'll have my DEB Birthday haul to share with you. It's a big one, so be prepared! ;)

xoxo
I never have been, and I likely never will be. I don't like the smell, and the taste is always too bitter for me. So when I received these four samples of Red Rose Simply Indulgent Teas in my Influenster J'adore VoxBox, I was a little...well worried. How do I review something I know I don't like?

Well, I decided to have an open mind and just try them anyway.

I googled the best way to "doctor" up flavored teas like these when you aren't a tea-drinker, and most people said to add plenty of milk/cream and sugar. I like milk. I like sugar. Let's do this.

In my VoxBox I received three Creme Caramel tea bags and one Lemon Chiffon tea bag. I figured milk and sugar would go better in a caramel flavored tea, so I grabbed one of those.

From the Influenster product card: "Red Rose Simply Indulgent Teas deliver rich decadent flavors in a
premium black tea blend. Enjoy this indulgence in a cup, with none of
the calories and none of the guilt."

I decided to use my Keurig to brew the tea because boiling water takes too damn long. Can I just talk about my Keurig for a second? I love this thing. My sister and I begged for one for like...six months, and Santa brought us one as our family Christmas gift, straight from a QVC Today's Special Value presentation. As you can see, my family is made up of coffee people. My mom drinks tea from time to time, but we like coffee. And cocoa.

I put the tea bag in my Soft Kitty mug (a Christmas gift from my sister--along with a T-shirt and a singing Soft Kitty doll) and I noticed that it didn't have a super strong tea smell. I mean...I could tell it was tea, but it wasn't that overpowering smell that I strongly dislike. I brewed some hot water into my cup; I used the second-smallest setting--6 oz. I believe--to make sure I'd have plenty of room for milk in my mug. The instructions recommend steeping the tea for 3-5 minutes, and I think I left mine for just under 3--I don't like strong tea, remember?

I added some sugar and some Vanilla flavored powdered creamer...because it was sitting there...and then filled my mug the rest of the way with milk. It kind of looked like a really light roast coffee filled 3/4 of the way with milk. Really creamy looking.

Then, I tasted. It...wasn't bad. Obviously the tea wasn't strong because I didn't steep it for very long, but I could still taste tea more than I could taste any flavor. However, it wasn't terrible. It was definitely a tea that I could drink all of, versus the million other teas I've tried that I poured down the drain before the second sip.

So even though tea is not my favorite thing in the world, and I will still never be a tea drinker, I have to say that this Red Rose Creme Caramel tea was not bad. It's definitely something I would keep on hand for days when my throat is hurting and I need something hot.

I decided to skip my February faves post and do a combined February/March Faves post as the month closes out because I only tried one or two products I'm obsessed with last month, and that didn't seem like enough for a full post. I also have my first ipsy unbagging and a DEB birthday shopping haul on deck for you, so stay tuned!

Today I have my March Julep Maven box to show you.

This month Julep released The Riviera Collection. "The Riviera Collection includes nine jet-setting shades inspired by the
vibrant colors and luxurious, laidback lifestyle of the Mediterranean
coastline" (via Julep's blog).

I opted for the Modern Beauty box this months because A. Lord knows I have too much nail polish, and B. I like lip products.

The Modern Beauty box included the Luxe Lip Conditioning Treatment and the Buff Lip Scrub.

The Luxe Lip Conditioning Treatment is "fortified with omega-rich pumpkin oil nourishing sunflower wax, and healing vitamin E." It also includes Green coffee bean oil to "smooth fine lines and enhance lip definition." Julep instructs that this treatment be applied to lips throughout the
bed and before bed, and can be worn alone or as a hydrating base for lip color.

This stuff smells amazing--just like pumpkins. It's really thick and creamy, and it has a slight pink tint to it, but it doesn't really translate on the skin. Well, at least not on the back of my hand. I think I'll be getting a lot of use out of this since this bitterly cold winter has left my lips so dry.

The Julep Buff Lip Scrub is "packed with exfoliating sugar crystals, nourishing vitamin E, and moisturizing panthenol (vitamin B5), [and]...buffs away dry, flaky skin to reveal smooth, gorgeous lips." The instructions are simple enough: massage over lips and tissue off. It's basically meant to be a sugar scrub that is contained in a convenient applicator rather than in a jar, which can get kind of messy.

This stuff smells really sweet. Almost vanilla scented, but I'm not really sure how exactly to describe it. I rubbed it on the back of my hand and it's a little sticky, and the sugar crystals are really fine, so I didn't actually feel them until I rubbed it with my finger. I think this will feel really good on my chapped lips before I apply the Conditioning Treatment, just to get all that gross dry skin off.

I did opt to add of the Julep polish add-ons this month because I had some Jules to spend. This polish caught my eye because of the name more than the color. Rae is my middle name, so I had to have this. One of the reasons I like Julep so much is because I have managed to actually almost find a polish spelled like my name. It's missing an 'l,' but Alyson does have the 'y' I can never seem to find on personalized products (Thanks, Mom). I also managed to pick up a polish called Ally, so that's cool.

Anyway, back to Rae. Rae is the 2014 Pantone Color of the Year polish, a "Radiant Orchid creme."

It's really pretty in the bottle, and looks like it will be one or two coater, which is a plus. I do kind of need more cream polishes in my life; almost everything I have is shimmery or glittery--just like me! haha. I will be swatching this one once I receive the March birthstone polish I ordered from the Secret Store (because it's my birthday month!) so be on the lookout for that in the next week or so.

Also, a little extra Julep threw in: a cinnamon stick candy from Gilliam candy company! Yummy. I love the little treats that Julep includes in our Maven boxes. They also included a 35% discount code for the lip duo from this month's box, and a 25% off code for the lip glosses that were included in the other Maven boxes this month.

If you're interested in the Julep Maven program, you can sign up here. The subscription is $19.99 a month, and (under the new terms of the program) you can earn a skip every six months. You'll take a quiz and determine your default style profile, and you can change that default profile or try a new style every month during the selection window. As a Maven, you also receive free shipping and 20% off all purchases at julep.com. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and I'll answer as best I can.

I'll be putting up my February Faves post sometime this week, and I'll also have an ipsy glam bag first impressions post and some new OOTDs coming up soon too. :)

xoxo
I love Fridays. I think it's the result of spending 19 years in the education system and knowing that Fridays mean weekends. Weekends don't mean much to me now, seeing as though I work an irregular schedule in retail, which means I work several weekends. But this weekend, I am free. So TGIF indeed.

As promised, today I am doing a full product review of the Boots Botanics Shine Away Ionic Clay Mask I received in my Influenster J'adore VoxBox this week.

Spoiler Alert: it's awesome.

Let me take you through my process and explain exactly why I think it's awesome.

I have been obsessed with clay/mud masks since I tried a sample of a
high end mud mask I got in a Sephora order. It was so luxurious and made
my face feel so good. But I couldn't justify $42 for the amount of mask
I'd be getting, so I've been searching for alternatives.

The Boots Botanics Shine Away Ionic Clay Mask claims to "actively remove impurities and deeply cleanse" skin, and is made with Willow bark, which is a natural source of salicylic acid, which "helps refine skin texture and actively target imperfections." I do struggle with uneven skin texture, large pores and spots where my skin isn't quite right.

From the Influenster product card: "Treat your skin to deep cleansing with this mineral-rich clay mask.
Designed for use on normal skin, the unscented, hypo-allergenic formula
absorbs excess oil and deeply cleanses skin. The oceanic clay exhibits a
negative electrical charge, which helps to draw out impurities without
overdrying, leaving your skin feeling softer and smoother."

Like most masks I've tried, this one says to apply to cleansed skin, so I started by washing my face with this Bioré Warming Anti-Blackhead Cleanser.

Now I have a love/hate relationship with this cleanser. I love the warming effect. It feels so good on my skin. But the product itself is really thick and hard to lather up, and the microbeads tend to irritate my skin if I rub too hard. I think I need to find a more gentle everyday cleanser.

Now I am about to lay it all out on the line for you people. Here I am, post-cleansing and sans-makeup:

Okay. Maybe not so bad. But let's get up close and personal.

Here you can see just how uneven my skin is. The enlarged pores on my nose and cheeks. The tiny bumps on my chin and forehead. Not to mention the tiny breakouts I have going on right now. Yuck.

Okay. Moving on. Let's get to this mask already.

The first thing I noticed was how much thinner this mask is in comparison to other masks I've tried. I actually needed to shakeup the tube because when I tried to squeeze some product out, all I got was liquid. However, despite the shaking, this product went on so nicely. The thin formula actually made it a little easier to spread on my face.

The thin formula also cut down on drying time. I'd say I put a fairly thick layer on my face and by the time I got around to taking this photo--maybe 30 seconds after application--the edges were already drying. Niceee.

It felt really good--it was smooth and it didn't have any weird or strong smells like some of the others I've tried. I was also really pleased at how it didn't tingle or burn when I applied it to my skin. A few of the others I've tried felt as though my skin was on fire while it was still wet. Maybe due to their perfumes or the ingredients themselves. (The burning wasn't allergies--many reviews of those masks described the same thing. Just an effect of the mask itself.) But this mask was so nice. No burning, no tingling, no watery eyes or using a blow dryer to make it dry faster so the burning would stop. It was relaxing.

It says to let it dry for about 10 minutes, and I might have left it for 15-20 (I was watching TV and waiting for a commercial!) But by the time it was dry and I was ready to rinse it off, my face was pretty tight and difficult to move--a good thing when it comes to a mask for me.
Just that one little spot above my eyebrow hadn't fully dried, but I had a pretty thick glob of product right there.

I love how you can really see on my nose where it settled into my pores and really drew out the gross that was all up in there. I LOVE that.

After rinsing, my face felt significantly softer and smoother. Obviously this mask didn't cure my texture issues with just one use, but I can see a significant difference in my skin, and I think with repeated use, coupled with some other products, this mask could really help me with that.

Overall, I am thrilled with this mask. I love that it's easy to apply, quick to dry and doesn't feel like it's burning or tingling as it dries. I really love that this mask isn't full of crazy chemicals and perfumes. The ingredients are literally sea silt (natural oceanic clay), water and willow bark extract--with just a couple preservatives to elongate its shelf life. This mask gets a two thumbs up from me, and I'll be using this tube until it's bone-dry.

As I said before, I got this sample in the J'adore VoxBox from Influenster. Influenster is this awesome program where you can sign up, review products and connect with social
media in order to raise your Influenster score. When your score is high
enough, you can qualify for samples and VoxBoxes like the one I received. If you're interested in joining Influenster, comment below for an e-mail invitation. I don't get anything if you use my link to sign up, but I think it affects both of our Influenster
scores for the better.

I hope you guys have a great weekend. Be on the lookout for my upcoming February Faves post. :)
When I saw this was going to be included in the box, I was so excited. I am obsessed with clay masks, and I am searching for the perfect one. This is the Boots Botanics Shine Away Ionic Clay Mask (Retail: $9.39).

"Treat your skin to deep cleansing with this mineral-rich clay mask. Designed for use on normal skin, the unscented, hypo-allergenic formula absorbs excess oil and deeply cleanses skin. The oceanic clay exhibits a negative electrical charge, which helps to draw out impurities without overdrying, leaving your skin feeling softer and smoother."

I am so excited to try this mask, and I'll be doing a full, in-depth product review of this mask in the coming days.

To be honest, I am not a big hair person. I have really long hair, but I am not good at styling it at all. I pretty much just let it dry and do what it wants. When I do decide to style it though, I default to a flat iron because it's relatively easy to handle and difficult to screw up. My hair holds straightening pretty well, but it does get pretty frizzy. But maybe this will help--the John Freida Frizz Ease 3-Day Straight Flat Iron Spray (Retail: $9.99 for 3.5 fl. oz.).

"Revolutionary heat-activated formula wraps each strand in long-lasting straightness for up to 3 days (or until your next shampoo if less than 3 days) without weighing hair down. Formula, infused with Keratin, protects against heat damage and blocks frizz, making hair glossy, smooth, and swinging with body."

Well I know that I will likely not be able to test the 3 day claim, because I can't ever go that long without shampooing. My hair is too oily to last that long. But I have pretty high hopes for this product, and I have a feeling that my hair-obsessed sister will be helping to test this with me.

I have a long-standing fear of false lashes. I am terrified of gluing my eyelids shut, or having crooked lashes. I am pretty blessed with my lashes--they are naturally long and really only need a little mascara for volume sake. I have some experience with Kiss nail products, but the is the first time I've seen their Looks So Natural Lashes (Retail: $3.99).

"KISS Looks So Natural Lashes are made with Tapered End Technology so lash strips blend seamlessly with your own lashes, inconspicuously highlighting your eyes--they're so luxuriously light and comfortable, you'll forget you're wearing them! Available at Walgreens & CVS Stores Nationwide."

Now despite my naturally long lashes, and despite my fear of forever being Patchy the Pirate, I am intrigued by these. Sometimes a girl needs to take a risk to really reap a reward and so I think I will be taking the plunge and trying these babies on.

I am not a huge tea drinker. Sometimes I can drink iced tea if it's super sweetened, and I am a fan of Starbucks Tazo Passion Tea Lemonade (I even perfected a make-at-home recipe to save my wallet!). But the flavors of these Red Rose Simply Indulgent Teas (Retail: $4.49 for a carton of 20 tea bags) have me wondering if my palette can handle them.

"Red Rose Simply Indulgent Teas deliver rich decadent flavors in a premium black tea blend. Enjoy this indulgence in a cup, with none of the calories and none of the guilt."

I got three tea bags in the flavor Creme Caramel and one Decaf Lemon chiffon. I am going to give these the old college try, and hope for the best. If not, I can always share with my mom.

Ahh...and the big kahuna. A family size bag of Hershey's Kisses Milk Chocolates (Retail: $5.29). As you can see, I couldn't even wait for the photo before digging in to the bag. I am a Special Dark girl myself, but these are perfect to share with my entire chocoholic family.

"The right words don't always come easily. And sometimes it's impossible to say what you really mean. But give someone Hershey's Kisses Chocolates and you'll instantly say it all."

Maybe I'll leave a little pile of these on the kitchen counter for my dad when he comes home, 'cause he is the biggest chocoholic of us all haha.

Some Influensters also got a Vaseline Men's Spray Lotion in their box to share with their boyfriends/husbands, but I did not. Probably because I am as single as the day is long.

Overall, I am totally psyched to have gotten this box. There are some great products in here and I am really looking forward to trying them out.

If you are interested in becoming an Influenster, feel free to leave a comment below. I don't get anything if you use my link to sign up, but I can send you an e-mail invitation and I think it affects both of our Influenster scores for the better.
Be on the look out for my in-depth review of the Boots Botanics Clay Mask, and for updates about my use of the other products in this box :)
FTC Disclosure: I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.Allyson Raehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04110851843655797458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9101045510429149161.post-44366563360500629352014-02-17T19:38:00.000-05:002014-02-17T19:38:08.391-05:00Quick OOTD: Purple and Sequins

I decided I wanted to post this OOTD because I'm just obsessed with it.

Excuse the fact that I took the photo in the breakroom mirror at my job.

The shirt is from a brand called Design History, and I got it at T.J. Maxx on final clearance for $15.00. It was a Compare At: $50.00 shirt, so I was pretty pleased with that. I love it because the shirt is super sheer and lightweight, with a built-in cami, so I can wear it and not get too hot (which is a huge issue for me at work because I get hot when I move around a lot). Unfortunately I did snag the sequins in two different spots on a counter with a sharp corner, so I lost some sequins today. *sad face*

These purple pants are from DEB (similar here & here), and I love them so much I have them in every color (and two pairs in black!) The dress code at my job is "business casual," but it's basically no jeans and nothing too revealing. These pants are perfect because they aren't leggings, so they aren't clingy or see-through, but they are soft and stretchy and I can move around in them. They have a button and zip fly, and the two back pockets are actually functional. They have made these in so many colors and even some floral patterns, and I honestly think I've bought every style they made. Plus they make them in capri length for summer!

Now if I hadn't been going to work, I probably would have worn my Madden Girl combat boots with this outfit because they have a purple zipper up the back and they are adorbs. But those aren't the most comfortable shoes to work in, so I wore my trusty black Sketchers winter boots. (This style) They are super comfy, and keep my feet warm in the cold, but without being too warm inside all day. My mom, sister and I all wear the same size in these boots, so we bought three different colors and we just share them.

So that's today's quick and easy work OOTD. What are you wearing today?

I'm Allyson Rae and I'm so excited to introduce my new blog, iwearcatshirts.

This first post is just gonna be a little bit about me, and the things I'm hoping to do with this blog.

Well, I am 23...almost 24, and I have a B.A. in English from SUNY Fredonia. I've always been a writer, but up until now I haven't known what to write about. But in the past few months, I have become increasingly interested in beauty and fashion, and I really want to explore a little of that in this blog. I am a plus-sized girl--I always have been--and reading some of the amazing plus-sized fashion blogs out there has really inspired me in my own fashion choices, and has given me the confidence to really put myself out there and try to inspire girls like me. I'm also really kind of obsessed with makeup and nail polish, and trying new beauty products. I want to share my favorite products and the experience of trying new things will all of you.

The name iwearcatshirts came about while I was racking my brain for the perfect blog name. I was making a doodle map of words, and scrolling through my iPhone photo album when I saw a selfie of me in my new favorite cat shirt pop up. It's kind of quirky, which is pretty much me in a word, so I went with it. Thus, iwearcatshirts was born. #meow

This blog is going to be a combination of a bunch of different things. I'd probably call it a lifestyle blog. You can expect product reviews, monthly favorite product posts, random OOTDs, advice about fashion, beauty and life, reviews of books, tv shows, movies and music, and the occasional food post with recipe. Plus, there will probably be--often shameless-photos of my cats, so there is that to look forward to.

I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you, and to sharing my thoughts and advice with you. Feel free to pop me an e-mail at iwearcatshirts@gmail.com or shoot me a comment with any suggestions or ideas of things you would like to see. Also, follow me on twitter @iwearcatshirts.

xoxo
